Why the numbers work now

Commercial PV payback windows have collapsed from 10+ years to 4–7 years for most operators. Two things moved: panel and inverter prices are down roughly 80% on a decade ago, and grid electricity — the thing you'd otherwise be buying — has more than doubled. Every kWh you self-consume is a kWh you don't pay commodity, non-commodity and VAT on.

The three ways to fund it

  • Capital purchase. You own the asset. Best IRR, full capital allowances, but the cash sits on your balance sheet.
  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). A third party funds, installs and owns the system. You buy the electricity it produces at a fixed p/kWh, typically 30–50% below grid, for 15–25 years.
  • Lease / operating finance. Middle ground — you pay a fixed monthly amount and own the system at the end.

What feasibility actually looks at

  1. Roof condition, orientation, pitch and shading — plus structural loading if it's an older building.
  2. Half-hourly consumption data mapped against a simulated generation profile.
  3. Import capacity and the DNO's view on export — the G99 process determines what you can send back.
  4. Financial model comparing self-consumption, export income and displaced grid cost over 25 years.

Where solar pairs with the rest of your energy strategy

PV changes your load shape, which changes every future electricity quote. Add battery storage and you can time- shift generation into evening peak. Add EV charging and you turn afternoon export into on-site consumption. We model the interactions before you commit to any one piece.
